Hey everybody,

The first ACM meeting of the semester has been scheduled take place on
Monday, February 4th at 7 pm in room 317. Please note this is not our
usual room (1314) as it is already reserved by someone else!

This is meeting is of particular importance as we will be holding
nominations for chapter officers. So if you are interested in running
for the position of President, Vice-President, Treasurer, or Secretary
make sure to attend!

Additionally, I thought it would be fun to have a sort of
show-and-tell of our favorite internet sub-cultures. Since most of our
meetings end up as discussions of various internet phenomena, I
thought it would be an easy topic for a directed discussion. Each
person that attends should do their best to come with an interesting
internet-based phenomenon or anecdote which he/she wants to share with
the club.

For example, in researching the origins of the hacker group
"anonymous" which recently declared war on the Church of Scientology,
I discovered that relatively obscure image-based message-boards
actually represent one of the largest cultural forces on the internet,
especially in Japan.

For example, Wired magazine has this to say on 2channel, the most
popular of such sites:

"This single site has more influence on Japanese popular opinion than
the prime minister, the emperor and the traditional media combined.
... But conversations hosted here have also influenced stock prices,
rallied support for philanthropic causes, organized massive
synchronized dance routines, prevented terrorism and driven people to
their deathbeds."

So if you're interested in running for ACM office or just want to
share something fun you found on the web, come to the ACM meeting this
Monday!

PS And free pizza and soda will be served as always!
